Calamity Kate

“I’ve got total yoga hair…” Yup. Pretty much.

Thanks to Brynne for sharing.

things that are distracting me from the tasks at hand:
  1. How my parents forgot to introduce me to avocados, sugar snap peas, and hummus.
  2. How I managed to take my watch off during yoga, proceed to put in on the window sill, consider the fact that I might forget it, tell myself, “you won’t forget it”, and then forgot it.
  3. How come the managers at my yoga studio haven’t called or emailed me back. Hi, I come to yoga, because I’m an anxious person. You are supposed to be helping. Please do so.*
  4. How much better my life is with Bob Seger’s “Night Moves” in it.
  5. How today is beautiful and it’s supposed to rain on Saturday. How about a trade?
  6. How this wild child will be taking DC by storm tomorrow:
  7. And how flipping excited I am to see her.

*Update: They called and guess who has her watch back where it rightly belongs?

I will make it through this day and I will get my yoga “massage”… and make it home in time to see Gossip Girl. The power of positive thinking…

Note to you, Mr. Heavy Breather

Mr. Heavy Breather,

I come to yoga to relax and trick myself into becoming stronger through what feels like stretching. I want to leave feeling calm and Gumby-like. Do you realize you are making this not only impossible, but also this class with only SIX people (which would normally be a gift from God), insufferable? Save your Ujjayi breath for intimate times, unless you can’t help it. I can’t tell if you’re trying to show off or if you have a respiratory infection in which case you should really see a doctor.

Please and thanks,

Concerned and Still a Little Tense

P.S. - Kudos on the kick-ass farmer tan. Seriously impressive.

Becoming a Yogi

About a year ago, a friend introduced me to yoga. From the get-go, I loved it. What I didn’t love so much was the price tag that came along with finding my zen. Ugh. I’ve been trying to fit in classes where I can, rationalizing that the physical and mental payoff is well worth the $$. And you know what? It SOO is.

Being the wonderful mother (and listener) she is, my mom sent me a birthday surprise - a yoga pass! Since then, I’ve been guiltlessly attending yoga 1-2 a week. That doesn’t sound like that much until you take into account how long I stay sore for (see here). I went on Monday and I have to say, it was one of the best workouts I’ve had… maybe ever. I used muscles I didn’t know existed, realized my limits and pushed, pushed, pushed them. I’m still feeling all of the work I did and can’t wait to get back in there.

Lucky for me and lucky for YOU (if you live in the DC area), Studio Serenity, the studio I go to, is opening a new location in Dupont Circle on May 8th. They’re offering free classes for the entire week. Just a cherry on top? The week that follows is DC Yoga Week which means more free classes! Are you excited yet?

This woman below, Shiva Rea, is a highly regarded Yogi who will be leading yoga on the National Mall on the 15th, just part of DC Yoga Week. It’ll be a while before I can contort my body in those ways, but you have to start somewhere!

Weekend aspirations

I don’t know about you, but somehow the extra hour of sunlight and the warmer weather has equated to ants in my pants. It might as well be 5:30 because I can’t sit still thinking about all of the wonderful things that I’m going to do this weekend! Three birthday parties, plenty of sunshine, bikerides, yoga, and maybe an afternoon bevy or two? Ahh, the possibilities are endless.
